Units of measurement

"The principal chain of the Vindhias was crossed by eight in the evening, and another half was made on the northern slope, in a ruined bungalow.They had gone nearly twenty-five MILES that day, and an equal distance still separated them from the station of Allahabad." (chapterXII)
A mile is a unit of length value is 5,280 feet or 1,760 yard or 1,609 meters.But it isn't used in the international system of Units.

The seven base units and the interdependency of their definitions,clock wise from top:Kelvin(temperature),Second(time),Metre(lenght),kilogram(mass)Candela(luminous intensity),Mole(amount of substance) and Ampere(electric current).
